The Press is best known as a publisher in the humanities and social sciences, with a particular emphasis on books about Hong Kong's culture and history, about its institutions especially its law and politics. In film and contemporary culture, our interest ranges from Hong Kong film across the whole of East Asia with a special interest in transnational aspects of screen culture. As a bilingual press, we have a particular interest in the many ways English is spoken and used in Asia, and in the Cantonese language. Education is a matter of considerable debate in Hong Kong and we aim to contribute with books both in English and in Chinese. In addition, we publish in Chinese studies, gender studies, medicine, real estate and construction, and social work.

Publishing only non-fiction, and eschewing fiction and poetry, we seek books by and for an international academic audience, textbooks in our fields of interest, and we very much welcome those that bring new knowledge to an audience of serious lay-readers.

We welcome initial inquiries from authors. If your work seems suitable for the Press, we would like to see a proposal. Either send it to hkupress@hku.hk, or identify the editor who manages the Press's publishing in your area. Then send the proposal directly to him or her. A list of our editors is available further down this page.

To help acquaint you with the various stages of publication, we have prepared a description of the publication process. Authors who are preparing their manuscripts for submission should also read our guidelines for preparing a manuscript. (For our Style Manual for Chinese publications, please click here.)

Later, when you are submitting your manuscript for editing, please also complete and send in a Marketing Information Form which can be downloaded here.
